“A guy walks into a bar…”
Tom and Scott spent half a lifetime trying to find each other. If it is destiny that brings all great couples together, then she was working overtime to make this union.
You see, while technically Tom and Scott met in 2014, their paths had crossed a few times over the prior two decades and a span of 3,000 miles.
Scott had completed his studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1986 (the same year Tom was starting high school.) Scott then set out to pursue his theatrical career. His travels would take him to Florida, New England, Los Angeles, and other exotic destinations. But ultimately his love for the theatre would bring him back to New York City, center of the universe.
Meanwhile, Tom had just finished a four and a half year stretch at West Virginia University but still longed to try his own hand at the theatre. He would commute into the city every week to take classes, see shows, and audition. Little did he know that, while attending a performance of The Vagina Monologues, the handsome young House Manager of The Westside Theatre would be his future husband.
Scott finally had enough of the New York winters (and Summers) and in 2003 moved home to San Diego. By the same strange coincidence, Tom would make his first trip San Diego on vacation that same year. Tom immediately fell in love with Southern California and declared, “One day I will live here!”
Fast forward about a decade. 2012. Tom moves to San Diego and starts to establish himself. He lands a part time job working security at the San Diego Eagle. One night while working the door, a ‘done-with-relationships’ Scott gets his ID checked by Tom. They flirt a little and Scott disappears into the night.
Scott makes several attempts to ‘accidentally’ run into Tom over the next few months. Occasionally spotting him across the bar or talking to friends. He asks around and all Tom’s friends report back that ‘Tom is a good guy.’
Finally on October 24, 2014 Scott walks into the bar and musters up enough courage to ask Tom-the-bartender out on a coffee date. Tom eagerly accepts and they go out a week later.
The courtship quickly evolves and in a year Tom proposes.
It may seem quick to some but when you wait half a lifetime to meet your soul mate, you don’t want to waste one minute of precious time.
